Why Consider Innovative Options?
-
It is important to consider innovative approaches while exploring ways we can enhance our kids' learning and examining the barriers they face. The Innovative Options workgroup has as its main topic, "What would the ideal school look like to you?"
-
Many ideas emerged from the group's first workgroup meeting, including project-based learning, such as gardening, students teaching one another, recess for all kids and not treating it as a reward or punishment, a culturally responsive curriculum, more travel and exposure to languages, and flexibility based on the individual needs of students.
-
The group is considering themes for its focus and research, which could include (1) research and development and innovative programs and practices; (2) effective, high-quality relevant teaching and learning strategies; (3) creative use of structures (groupings and transitions); (4) learning inside and outside the classroom (environmental and community-based); (5) holistic learning; and (6) including cultural diversity in teaching and learning.
